As an entrepreneur, you constantly have goals to achieve and plans to carry out. And I’m sure you also have that great dream you really want to follow. Both in professional and personal area, you keep on thinking and talking about things you want to do or have.

You know that achieving them would make you happier and more successful financially. You know that hitting these goals would make your life better.

So if you know what you want, why haven’t you done it yet?

Let’s be honest: how many of your plans and dreams you really act on, and how many you constantly leave for “some day”? You say you want certain things, but you keep on postponing these goals over and over again. They always remain in the realm of the future.

So why you don’t get things done?

Three classic justifications for not achieving goals

Research shows that there are three typical justifications which people usually give to explain why they did not achieve a goal.

These reasons why people think they haven’t done what they said they wanted are the following:
1) Lack of time
2) Lack of resources
3) Lack of motivation

Now, I don’t know if I surprise you with what I’m going to say next or not, but these are NOT the real reasons for not achieving your goals. All these things you believe in firmly, are merely excuses!
You might say it’s ridiculous: you really don’t have time or money to do something right now.
Well, let me show you why each and every one of them is an excuse.

1. Lack of time

Let’s start with time.
Think about the situation when you had a strict deadline and you just really had to finish a project on time. In some cases it meant that you worked under a lot of pressure. Sometimes you might have worked till late at night. Sometimes you might have been exhausted, and cancelled all your other plans for the time until you finished it.
But guess what? YOU DID IT. So you have found time, even though you felt you didn’t have it at all. That’s exactly how it works. You only have time for things you make time for.

Coaching Solution:

  • Eliminate the “I don’t have time” cliché phrase from your dictionary. If you catch yourself saying that, remember it’s just an excuse.
  • You have time if you make time.

2. Lack of resources

Now let’s see the resources. These can be money, a suitable space, tools, skills or qualifications. There are a lot of resources you might need to accomplish an important goal.
Surely, some projects require an investment, a loan or financing. For some others you need a specific skill, like learning a new software, or marketing techniques for social media, or whatever else it can be.
Still, let me tell you this: you can ALWAYS, literally always, start where you are and do something to move closer towards your goal.

Coaching Solution:

  • Don’t wait for the perfect moment when you have all the resources you need. A perfect moment will never come.
  • Start where you are, with what you have.

3. Lack of motivation

As I have said, the third common excuse is lack of motivation.
Initially, you get excited about some idea or something you want to have or achieve. You feel pumped up and full of energy. And then after a few days or a couple of weeks you lose entusiasm. Somehow, you can’t force yourself to follow through. You don’t know how to find the motivation to it.
Motivation is a complex topic and there is a lot to explore about it in specific cases. I will explain it in the posts dedicated to this topic. One general thing I need to say here is that we often misunderstand what motivation is. We often think it is a kind of subconscious impulse that comes and goes, and we don’t have much power over it. That’s not the case. You do have control over what you decide to do.

Coaching Solution:

  • Motivation is strictly connected to your will and focus – and you have control over both.
  • Don’t just wait around to feel motivated – it won’t “come” to you.
  • Take a conscious decision to do what you want to achieve.
